Cycling along the Steveston Dyke

Steveston CyclingThe dykes along the Fraser River are ideal for a cycling adventure. Elevated for a superb view, flat as the prairies and tarmac covered with very little car traffic – easy trails for cyclists looking for a comfortable workout.

Savour the views of the Fraser River and the mountains in the distance. Inhale the smells of the country and get a front-row seat on nature. Observe a myriad of birds and waterfowl along the dyke.

For lunch we stop at Steveston, a picturesque fishing village on the South Arm of the Fraser River. Choose from many boutiques and shops, ice cream parlours, restaurants and fish & chip shops.

Steveston used to be the center of Canada’s Salmon fishing industry. Here different fishing cultures converged. After lunch we will visit some of the surviving remnants of this area including:

  • Britannia Heritage Shipyard
Local monument to the history and tradition of wooden boat building.
  • The Gulf of Georgia Cannery
Today a museum to the industry, the cannery was once the largest producer of canned salmon in British Columbia.
  • London Farm
Close-up view of Fraser Valley farm life in the 19th century.
  • Fin Slough
Originally established in the 1880’s by immigrant fishers from Finland, Finn Slough has been a fishing village for over a hundred years.
